THORSDAY TENNIS

IN THE VALE OF CRAIG Y DON

LIES A MODERN PARTHENON

WITH COURTS AND GREENS

AND A TIERED GYMNASIUM

THERE ON THORS DAY

WHEN THE GODS PERMIT

ASSEMBLE AGED WARRIORS

BRONZED AND LEAN AND FIT

DO BATTLE AS IN ANCIENT TIMES

BUT NOT WITH SWORD AND SPEAR

INSTEAD THEY USE A RACQUET

AND A BALL TO INSTILL FEAR

THE BATTLE RAGES, FORTH AND BACK

DESPERATE DEFENCE TURNING TO ATTACK

UNTIL THE GAME IS WON

AND VANQUISHED AND VICTORS AGREE

THAT TENNIS IS SUCH FUN

AND ARM IN ARM RETIRE FOR TEA

Composed by Ray Valadini and declaimed by him at the group’s New Year Lunch.

Why not join the ‘aged warriors’ at 10.00 every Thursday morning. Many of us played tennis in our youth and only returned to the game in our retirement. The emphasis is on having fun rather than winning at all costs (well, that goes for most of us!) but we’ll also fill you in on the other, more competitive, club sessions if you wish.

If you’d like more details before joining us give Brian Williams a ring on 01492 876230 or if you need to borrow a racquet ring Alwyn On 01492 870331.
